He gave his name to a famous paradox, produced the theory of descriptions and, with Alfred North Whitehead, the monumental Principia Mathematica. Outside academia, he spent six months in prison for opposing the First World War and, at nearly ninety, went to prison again for campaigning against nuclear weapons.

Few lives combined such technical rigor with so much public militancy. Understanding Russell means following both threads: the mathematician who wanted to reduce mathematics to logic, and the pacifist who remained a troublesome voice until the age of 97.

A lonely childhood among aristocrats

Russell was born on May 18, 1872, at Ravenscroft, the family’s country house in Trelleck, Monmouthshire, Wales. His childhood was marked by early deaths: his mother, Katherine, and his sister Rachel died in 1874, when he was two; his father, Viscount Amberley, died about eighteen months later. His grandfather, Lord John Russell, had twice served as prime minister and died soon after Bertrand’s sixth birthday. Bertrand and his brother Frank were then raised by their grandmother, Countess Russell.

Behind that custody there was a dispute. His father wanted his sons brought up as agnostics, and to prevent this the family turned to the courts: the boy became a ward of the Court and was handed to his grandmother. Educated at home by governesses and tutors instead of going to school, he learned French and German fluently — but grew up with almost no contact with other children, something he later regretted. At eleven, learning Euclidean geometry struck him, as his own words run in the Britannica account, “as dazzling as first love”: here at last was knowledge that could be demonstrated. The hope of giving all knowledge foundations of that kind stayed with Russell for the rest of his career.

Cambridge, the conversation with Moore and the return to logic

The isolation ended in 1890, when he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, to study mathematics. There he joined the Apostles, a famously secretive student society that included some of the most influential philosophers of the day, and eventually switched from mathematics to philosophy. He won a fellowship with a thesis on the foundations of geometry, published in 1897 as An Essay on the Foundations of Geometry — a work still in an idealist vein, treating geometry as a description of the structure of spatial intuition in Kant’s sense.

The idealism did not last. Around 1898 Russell abandoned it, in a move he credited in part to his conversations with his fellow Apostle G. E. Moore, but owed above all to a group of German mathematicians — Karl Weierstrass, Georg Cantor and Richard Dedekind — who were seeking logically rigorous foundations for mathematics. From that turn came the conviction that guided him from then on: philosophy advances by analysis, not by the construction of grand systems.

The paradox and the Principia

At the First International Congress of Philosophy, held in Paris in 1900, Russell encountered the work of the Italian mathematician Giuseppe Peano and began studying it immediately. The result was The Principles of Mathematics (1903), in which he defended logicism: the thesis that all of mathematics can be derived from a small set of purely logical axioms. Near the end of the work, he discovered that the German Gottlob Frege had reached similar ideas before him — and he added an appendix acknowledging Frege’s priority.

But in 1901 he had himself uncovered a crack in the project. Russell’s paradox arises from the class of all classes that are not members of themselves: if it is a member of itself, it should not be; if it is not, it should be. The contradiction struck at the foundation on which he and Frege wanted to raise mathematics — and, on receiving Russell’s letter, Frege replied that arithmetic totters. Russell’s answer was a restructuring of logic: the theory of types, developed between 1903 and 1908, which arranges sentences into hierarchical levels to block that kind of self-reference.

Between 1910 and 1913, in partnership with Whitehead, Russell published the three volumes of Principia Mathematica, a herculean attempt to demonstrate mathematically what the 1903 book had argued philosophically. Decades later, Kurt Gödel’s incompleteness theorem of 1931 showed that no single logical theory can derive all of mathematics — the Principia‘s grand aim was unattainable. The work nevertheless remains recognized as one of the great intellectual achievements of the twentieth century, and it shaped the development of mathematical logic.

The philosophy that changed its language

The Russell contribution most cited by philosophers does not come from the Principia but from a short article: “On Denoting,” from 1905. It contains the theory of definite descriptions, which translates propositions such as “the present king of France” into forms that need not assume the existence of what they name. The idea that the grammar of ordinary language hides the true logical form of sentences became his most enduring legacy. Together with Moore, he is recognized as a founder of analytic philosophy, the dominant tradition in the English-speaking world; his epistemology also produced logical atomism and neutral monism, the thesis that the “ultimate stuff” of the world is neither mental nor physical but something neutral between the two.

There was also the writer for the general public. The Problems of Philosophy (1912) showed he could explain difficult subjects to lay readers, and books such as Marriage and Morals (1929) and The Conquest of Happiness (1930) sold widely. In 1911, however, a young Austrian arrived in Cambridge, Ludwig Wittgenstein, whose Tractatus would shake Russell’s Platonic conception of logic — one of the blows that gradually pushed him away from technical philosophy.

Prison, a school and the break with communism

The First World War turned Russell into a full-time political agitator. Active in the movement against conscription, he lost his Trinity lectureship in 1916 because of his pacifism, was fined £100 over a leaflet, and in 1918 was sentenced to six months in prison for an article in The Tribunal. In his cell he wrote Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy (1919), a popularization of the Principia.

In 1920 he visited Soviet Russia and recorded his loathing of Bolshevik communism in The Practice and Theory of Bolshevism; that same autumn he went to China to lecture on philosophy at Peking University. With his second wife, Dora Black, whom he married in 1921, he founded the experimental school Beacon Hill in 1927, dedicated to progressive primary education and kept going until 1932. His private life remained turbulent: Russell married four times — Alys Pearsall Smith in 1894, Dora Black, Patricia Spence in 1936 and Edith Finch in 1952 — and in 1931 inherited the title of third Earl Russell when his brother died.

His years in the United States, between 1938 and 1944, ended in scandal: his appointment to City College of New York was cancelled in 1940 amid protests against his views on sex and religion. On the brink of financial ruin, he took a post at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia — out of which came A History of Western Philosophy (1945), a best-seller that for years was his main source of income.

Nobel, the bomb and the last appeal

Official recognition came late and suddenly: the Order of Merit in 1949 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950, awarded for the body of his writing — from logic to morals and politics. But Russell’s last phase belonged to the Cold War. On July 9, 1955, he released in London the Russell-Einstein Manifesto, signed also by Einstein, who had confirmed his support in one of his last letters months before the release, and which calls on scientists to appraise the perils of weapons of mass destruction and closes with a direct appeal: “We appeal, as human beings, to human beings: Remember your humanity, and forget the rest.” The document laid the foundations of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Pugwash conferences. In 1961, at 89, he was sentenced to a second term of imprisonment for his campaigning, and his final years saw him in mass demonstrations against nuclear weapons and the Vietnam War.

Anyone who wants to sum up his motivation can turn to the prologue of the Autobiography (1967), “What I Have Lived For”: “Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.” And to the way he spoke of religion — for him a disease born of fear and a source of untold misery — the subject of his celebrated 1927 address “Why I Am Not a Christian.” Between Einstein and Kant, between symbolic logic and the picket line, Russell kept a single throughline: no knowledge is exempt from the examination of arguments, and no authority, political or clerical, should be spared it.

Sources

Irvine, A.
